Indicator Data Changes & Corrections:

NI 2016:

  • 2016 edition Madison Dwelling Units relied on updated sourcing and tabulation methods. City staff undertook an extensive data cleaning, validation and updating process that accounts for some of the observed changes in the current year. In residential group quarters, each deliverable mail address was counted as a dwelling unit.
  • Sources and methods for tabulating Campus Dwelling Units differs from previous years. In residential group quarters, each deliverable mail address was counted as a dwelling unit.
  • Changes to the above methods for tabulating dwelling units may have produced differences in items whose formulas rely on dwelling units in their formulas (i.e. Median Year Built, Bike Network Access, and Available Transit Service Rate)
  • Some existing Bike Network segments were reclassified this year.

NI 2015:

  • Some existing Bike Network segments were reclassified this year. As a result, there was a reduction in the number of dwelling units within mile of a designated segment.
  • High Mobility Students began to be tabulated using a different method than in previous years.
  • Madison Metro made a small change to the transit stop database query; some campus routes were included for the first time this year; their inclusion may increase campus area measures of Transit Access.
  • When the Midvale Plan District was selected the reference map erroneously showed the Midtown Plan District boundary instead. This error was noted and corrected on 4/12/2017.

NI 2014:

  • Bike Network Access has undergone significant changes in sourcing this year and several previous years.
  • High Mobility Students was withdrawn from the database this year due to validity concerns.
  • Kindergarten Preparedness began to be tabulated using a different source and method than in previous years.
  • Fire / EMS calls began to be summarized by areas that include a 250 foot buffer area around the neighborhood.

NI 2013:

  • City staff undertook an extensive data cleaning, validation and update process resulting in more accurate City of Madison dwelling unit counts. In a few instances these corrections may produce apparent year-to-year variation in indicators such as bike path and transit access that incorporate dwelling locations into their formula.
  • A correction was made to the original 5-Year American Community Survey (ACS) estimates for City of Madison in the 2012 NI release.
  • Youth Opportunity Index was excluded beginning in 2013 due to concerns related to measure validity.

NI 2012:

  • Unemployment was reintroduced as indicator in 2012 due to its recent incorporation into the ACS 5-year block group estimates.
  • Families Receiving Income Qualifying Assistance was excluded beginning in 2011 due to lack of source availability.

NI 2011:

  • Demographic data release features 2000 and 2010 Census demographic variables along with 5-Year American Community Survey (ACS) Estimates for Family Poverty, Median Income & Vehicle Access. Nielson-Claritas used prior to 2011 have been deprecated so that N/A appears in their place.
  • Water Use was excluded due to lack of reliable neighborhood level estimates.

NI 2010:

  • City of Madison dwelling units and UW/Edgewood College Campus Dwelling Units (estimated) have been added to the profiles beginning in 2011. Our hope is that dwelling unit increase/decline can serve to signal population change within neighborhoods and plan districts.
  • Data on High Mobility Students were revised based on corrections provided by MMSD.
  • Community Pride Violations data underwent significant changes in sourcing.

NI 2008 & 2009:

  • Citywide tallies of Crime Incidents and Fire/EMS Calls) were revised to reflect only service calls within City of Madison police and fire sectors.
