NI 2016:

  • 2016 edition Madison Dwelling Units relied on updated sourcing and tabulation methods. City staff undertook an extensive data cleaning, validation and updating process that accounts for some of the observed changes in the current year. In residential group quarters, each deliverable mail address was counted as a dwelling unit.
  • Sources and methods for tabulating Campus Dwelling Units differs from previous years. In residential group quarters, each deliverable mail address was counted as a dwelling unit.
  • Changes to the above methods for tabulating dwelling units may have produced differences in items whose formulas rely on dwelling units in their formulas (i.e. Median Year Built, Bike Network Access, and Available Transit Service Rate)
  • Some existing Bike Network segments were reclassified this year.

NI 2015:

  • Some existing Bike Network segments were reclassified this year. As a result, there was a reduction in the number of dwelling units within mile of a designated segment.
  • High Mobility Students began to be tabulated using a different method than in previous years.
  • Madison Metro made a small change to the transit stop database query; some campus routes were included for the first time this year; their inclusion may increase campus area measures of Transit Access.
  • When the Midvale Plan District was selected the reference map erroneously showed the Midtown Plan District boundary instead. This error was noted and corrected on 4/12/2017.

In a few instances these corrections may produce apparent year-to-year variation in indicators such as bike path and transit access that incorporate dwelling locations into their formula.
  • A correction was made to the original 5-Year American Community Survey (ACS) estimates for City of Madison in the 2012 NI release.
  • Youth Opportunity Index was excluded beginning in 2013 due to concerns related to measure validity.
